Bordeaux Wine is one of the most famous brands when it concerns wine. It is popularly known for its quality and elegance. The quality of wine produced in Bordeaux is attributed to the same factors responsible for the success of the wine industry worldwide. These include the existence of a number of wine producing countries which have similar climatic conditions and a similarity of wine producing methods. Bordeaux wines, like the red Burgundy wines, are made from grapes which are cultivated in warm climates. The wine is produced by fermentation of the sugars that are present in the grape juice. In Bordeaux, the grapes are predominantly of red varieties, which are harvested and fermented in the fall.

A comprehensive report shows that Bordeaux is thriving despite the pandemic and that 2020 will be another successful year.

NEW YORK, NY (May 10, 2021)– Cult Wines, a leading global investor and manager of fine wine collections, today released the Bordeaux En Primeur, Vintage 2020 report, which shows that the 2020 vintage may well be one of the most memorable in Bordeaux history. The report, which provides potential investors and wine collectors with an overview of this year’s En Primeur (EP) campaign, as well as an in-depth analysis of the quality of individual wines reviewed by Cults Wines’ global experts, finds that Bordeaux continues to flourish despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic.

Bordeaux En Primeur has established itself as a central event in the annual fine wine calendar, adapting to the challenges posed by the global pandemic for two consecutive seasons and continuing to deliver high quality wines to passionate collectors, oenophiles and investors, said Tom Gearing, CEO and co-founder of Cult Wines. The 2020 harvest produced wines with exceptional potential, but their quality varied depending on terroir and producer, underscoring the need to remain selective even with quality harvests. While EP campaigns give consumers an early look at new vintages, they benefit from the specialist knowledge, access, connections and investment insight that only our global experts at Cult Wines can provide.

The report notes that 2020 will be the third consecutive quality harvest for the region. Thanks to an improved macroeconomic context, Bordeaux is more confident about the starting figures of the 2020 campaign than last year. In 2019, the EPs talked about cancelling, but switched to a virtual format at the last minute due to the global pandemic. Despite the disruption, EP 2019 was a resounding success thanks to the region’s flexibility in terms of format and pricing. A price drop of up to 30% year-on-year has helped revive the region, which remains the benchmark for the global fine wine market.

In addition to lower volumes than last year, the upcoming Bordeaux EP received favorable reviews from world-renowned critics, putting pressure on prices and pushing them up from last year’s discounts. Nonetheless, Cult Wines expects grape prices to remain lower this season than they were before the pandemic, which will be an attractive factor for buyers and investors. For more information on the 2020 vintage and yield history, check out the report, which offers exclusive information and early access to EP from the world-class gourmet wine experts at Cult Wines.

The report also includes Cult Wines’ EP Index, which objectively tracks the annual performance of EP wines (since 2015). The Cult Wines EP40 Index (CWEP40) consists of a fixed list of 40 wines from across Bordeaux that meet the company’s liquidity criteria – regularly sold and available – and is available in five different ranges by vintage – 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In the last four EP campaigns, Cult Wines’ specific selections have outperformed the CWEP40 since their release. This proves the value of the brand’s selective approach, which is based on quantitative research and knowledge of individual producers and wines.

The Bordeaux 500 index compiled by Liv-ex, the region’s broadest market indicator, posted a positive performance in the 12 months to 31 December. The 8.77% yield in March 2021 has made the region a stable bastion of the noble wine universe. The key question is how many wine producers can afford to raise prices before 2020 without disrupting the new momentum of the Bordeaux market. Given the ongoing disruption from the pandemic, the uncertain economic recovery, and the risk of a price surge, buyers likely expect 2020 prices to remain below pre-pandemic levels and in line with 2019.
