Jun 18 – Sonoma, California – The Cava Academy is open to wine professionals from around the world. With extensive courses from big names such as Pedro Ballesteros MW and Ferran Sentelles, and the innovative Basque Culinary Centre, the academy aims to make its courses accessible to all. The initiative came about as a result of strong interest from the Kava Regulatory Authority and in response to requests from wine enthusiasts who wanted to learn more about kava. This exclusive educational project grew out of the success of several face-to-face sessions in the United States, the United Kingdom and Belgium. The new academy, available in three languages (Spanish, Catalan and English), is a more accessible training tool designed to train professionals in different areas of the sector – sales, distribution, wine tourism and others. This is the first training made exclusively for D.O.’s. Cava (Cava Regulatory Council). During the course, participants will become experts in everything related to quality Spanish sparkling wine, from viticulture and cava production to classification and quality assurance, tasting and pairing. The program offers audio-visual aids, videos and interactive tests that make learning enjoyable, intuitive and adaptable to each student’s pace. Tastings will be led by leading wine professionals and cava ambassadors, including Pedro Ballesteros MW and Ferran Sentelles, in the form of educational video tutorials. Upon passing the exam at the end of the course, successful candidates receive a Cava Certified Trainer diploma and access to the Cava Academy alumni community. In addition, once travel restrictions are lifted due to the pandemic, graduates will be able to participate in a two- or three-day visit to the Cava region to visit wineries, and master classes focused on the gastronomic diversity of Cava. Students who wish to go further will have the opportunity to submit a thesis of their choice on three industry-related topics during the year. The title of Cava Expert will be awarded to all those who submit their work according to the requirements, and the best placed work of the year will also be awarded. According to Javier Pages, president of Cava D.O.: The Kava Academy was created to train real kava experts as ambassadors to increase the experience and understanding of kava in their areas of expertise: Restaurants, educational institutions, grocery and specialty stores. They will speak about the excellence of kava and the region to those new to the subject, and give them the confidence to speak knowledgeably about kava to the community of kava lovers around the world. The number of places at the Cava Academy is limited. A maximum of 40 students participate in each graduation ceremony. Recruitment for 2021 is now open until the 26th.
