At the top of the list is the 2018 Sangiovese from Pedroncelli Alto Vineyards, from Manor Vineyards Alto in the Dry Creek Valley. The wine is aged for 10 months in neutral American oak barrels.

2018 Pedroncelli Vineyards Alto Sangiovese

Get out of the bottle:

Our family has been in Sonoma County since 1927. We have been producing wine for four generations and sharing it with generations of wine lovers. Hand-picked on the steep, terraced slopes known as Vignobles de l’Alta, this medium-bodied Sangiovese has aromas of ripe berries, plums and a hint of cocoa.

Produced and bottled in Pedroncelli14.7% alcohol

The 2018 Sangiovese from Pedroncelli Alto Vineyards begins with pleasant aromas of bright red cherry and licorice, with hints of cranberry and spice and a touch of wet earth.

Take a sip and you’ll find juicy candied cherries and strawberries in your mouth turning into pie. With lovely notes of spice and vanilla, soft tannins and a smooth mouthfeel, it is ideal for drinking and cooking. It opens very well and after a few hours new layers form in the glass. (In fact, it opened so well that it was just a hair away from a perfect score of 10 flavors).

The finish is dry and long, with some lingering spice and a hint of toasted oak under a slightly acidic fruit. Yum, yum, yum! It’s not that hard, but it’s pure liquid fun.

Next up is the 2018 Little Sirah vineyard, developed from two Pedroncelli family vineyards (Bushnell Manor and Vineyard) in the Dry Creek Valley. The wine was aged for 16 months in small American oak barrels, 35% of which were new.

2018 Vignobles Familia Pedroncelli Petite Sirach

Get out of the bottle:

Hand-picked grapes from the vineyards of two families give this full-bodied little Sirah a rich, deep and complex flavor with ripe plums, white pepper and hints of chocolate.

Produced and bottled in Pedroncelli14.3% alcohol

The Pedroncelli family’s 2018 Petite Sirah vineyard begins with beautiful aromas of black fruit, spice, vanilla and smoke, as well as cedar and chocolate.

The wine has a juicy, spicy and slightly smoky taste. Full-bodied and beautifully balanced, the wine is full of rich black fruit and shows plenty of blended spice. It opens really well after a few hours in the glass. That’s a pretty good example of little Sirah.

The finish is dry, long and slightly chewy with lots of lingering spice notes under the fruit. Like all Pedroncelli wines, this one is a pure delight to drink and the price is way too high.

Third, we have a barrel of Pedroncelli Select Cabernet French 2017 from the Dry Creek Valley vineyards. The wine was aged for 17 months in a combination of new (30%) and old French oak barrels.

2017 Cask Pedroncelli Select Cabernet Franc

Get out of the bottle:

Hand-picked from the winery’s vineyards along the Dry Creek Valley bank, where the gravelly silt and climate provide near-perfect conditions. Our Cabernet Franc has aromas of ripe berries and rich flavors of plum and warm spices.

Produced and bottled in Pedroncelli14.2% alcohol

Pedroncelli Barrel Select’s Cabernet Franc 2017 opens with a nice aroma of black fruits (plum, black cherry) and that characteristic Cabernet Franc grass.

Once you take a sip, you will see that it is beautiful and delicious – a great example of Cabernet Frank! Beautifully balanced, with lots of well-integrated oak in the form of cooking spices, vanilla and others, as well as black pepper and lots of juicy black fruit, simply delicious. Smooth and a little tanned, it even has a hint of earth.

It ends dry and quite long. Like all Pedroncelli wines, this wine has good aging potential. I loved it and it’s a great change from the Cabernet Sauvignon!

Fourth, in 2018, we received a Signature Selection of Pedroncelli Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, aged for 9 months in small French oak barrels, 25% of which were new.

2018 Pedroncelli Russian Pinot Noir Valley

Get out of the bottle:

From the beautiful vineyards of the Russian River Valley, our elegant, medium-bodied Pinot Noir has warm cherry and spice flavors framed by moderate tannins and toasty oak accents.

Produced and bottled in Pedroncelli13.5% alcohol

The fantastic 2018 Pinot Noir from the Russian river valley of Pedroncelli begins with a very pleasant aroma of strawberry, cola, spice and a bit of earth and wood.

The tasting shows that this is a fairly classic Russian River Valley (RRV) pinot, which is very good. It has a pronounced, mentholated strawberry and plum flavor, good acidity and a soft feel in the mouth. To my taste, it offers a near perfect blend of fruit and oak influences – it doesn’t overdo the oak like many RRV Pinot trees do.

The finish is dry and long, with lots of fruit, notes of toasted oak and hints of spice and mint. It’s an excellent Pinot and maybe even a little better than the 2017 we had previously suggested! It would have been accompanied by many different dishes, but the one that comes to mind when tasting it was a big juicy burger.

The fifth bottle in today’s Insider Deal is the Dry Creek Valley 2018 Zinfandel Pedroncelli Mother Clone, a blend of 90% Zinfandel and 10% Dry Creek Valley Petite Sirah.

The grapes come from a ranch that has been planted in Zinfandel since 1904 and was purchased by John Pedroncelli Sr. in 1927. Most of the vines were replanted in the 1980s with vines cloned from the originals (hence the name), but the wine also contains fruit from the remaining parent vines, which are over 110 years old. It spends 12 months in American oak, 30% of which is new.

2018 Clone Mother of Pedroncelli Dry Creek Zinfandel Valley

Get out of the bottle:

Hand picked on the slopes, our old Mother Clone Zinfandel vineyard is a great expression of Dry Creek Valley character, balancing the flavors of blackberry and jam with the spice of black pepper.

Produced and bottled in Pedroncelli14.8% alcohol

Zinfandel Valley Dry Creek’s 2018 Pedroncelli mother clone Pedroncelli starts with a nice mix of flavors that sucks you through the glass. Blueberries, plums, pastry spices and a hint of vanilla blend harmoniously.

Take a sip and you’ll find a sweet, beautiful, medium-bodied wine filled with juicy black fruit, more deliciously integrated spices and a bit of cola. It’s tasty, but not too strong and balanced enough. Black pepper and a hint of smoke lead to a dry and very long finish of this fantastic wine.

And if it’s drinking surprisingly well now, we know from experience that Pedroncelli wines get even better with age!
