The resort’s wine cellar hosts special wine and culinary events throughout the year, showcasing the latest innovations.

Originally from Argentina, a mixologist and sommelier who has worked in luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants around the world, Lucas Girod will have overall responsibility for the winery’s $500,000 collection as the new Maldives Wakkaroo Chief Sommelier. The expansion to 520 labels ranges from old to new world wines and includes rare vintages such as Château Cheval Blanc from 1974 and 1985, Louis Roederer Cristal Brut from 2002, Krug Clos du Mesnil from 2002 and Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé from 2009, as well as Sassicala from 1990, Château d’Yquem from 2002 and Tiganello from 2006 to 2014.

It is the diversity and sophistication of the collection that prompted Wine Spectator to renew the Best of the Best award for the Wakkaroo Reserve in the latest issue of Restaurant Awards magazine. The coveted Best of Excellence Award, presented to nearly 3,800 restaurants in 80 countries and territories, is specifically designed to recognize venues for serious wine lovers who demonstrate a deep commitment to wine, both in the winery and through their service team. Vakkaru is one of ten stations in the Maldives and 1,387 stations worldwide to receive this award, which is one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind in the world. This year marks the first year that the Vakkaroo Reserve has been on the prestigious list, one of only two resorts in the Maldives to do so. Last year there were 139 new registrations for this position.

This award is the latest validation of Wakkaroo’s ambitious steps to build one of the most unique and remarkable vineyards in the Indian Ocean. Guests who want to discover what makes the reserve so special will have many new experiences. Led by Girod, the sea wine tasting sessions invite guests to relax barefoot in the open air, nestled in the beauty of the resort’s lagoon. For more unique memories of the Maldives, enjoy an intimate tasting on a sandbank where fascinating wines are paired with the serene beauty of the Indian Ocean.

The best wines of the New World, accompanied by fine cheeses and top quality charcuterie. These presentations will complement existing experiences at the Wakkaroo Reserve, showcasing the resort’s finest wines. The wine cellar accommodates up to 10 guests in a covered lounge for intimate dinners. The outdoor dining table, surrounded by palm trees and beautifully lit with candles at dusk, can accommodate eight people. It is a popular meeting place for friends to sample the Wakkaroo Reserve’s cigar collection and wines.

Dinner at Wakkaru Reserve begins with a Maldivian lobster and filet mignon and foie gras with honey mustard greens, accompanied by a flight of champagne and wines of various styles. If customers just want to stop and taste what they have found, this can also be arranged.

The station has invested $500,000 in excellent international wines, and a recent Wine Spectator award showed how seriously the team takes the pleasures of the table.
