To celebrate its 40th anniversary and in partnership with the Sonoma Valley Winemakers and Growers Alliance, Pioneer Winery is digging into its cellar.

SONOMA, CA (April 7, 2021) – Visitors to Schug Carneros Estate Winery can now explore the rich history of the estate. Founded 40 years ago by famed winemaker Walter Schug, the estate now offers visitors a wine library where they can sample vintages accompanied by food. Claudia Schug, co-owner and second-generation winemaker, hosts the sessions on Friday mornings, providing historical details and stories to give deeper insight into the unique courses, while chef Christine Schug prepares delicious appetizers to match the wine and conversation. A virtual tasting is also planned later this month.

The historic tasting, which kicks off in April during the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance Library’s Wine Experience Month and will last until late spring, comes at a time when Schug is celebrating its 40th anniversary. After making a name for himself as head of grape growing at E & J Gallo and first winemaker at Joseph Phelps, Walter Schug followed his passion for pinot noir to the windswept hills of the Carneros region. Although he passed away in 2015, Claudia and her brother, managing partner Axel Schug, have continued his legacy and oversee the day-to-day operations of the winery, along with German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid, who took over production with the 2019 vintage.

Schug, which produces 30,000 cases sold throughout the United States and on four continents, focuses on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from its Carneros vineyard, and from partner vineyards elsewhere in Carneros and on the Sonoma Coast. The winery also produces Bordeaux varietals from the best locations in Sonoma County, in honor of Walter Shug’s work at Phelps.

A library wine experience will be offered on Friday at 11 a.m. for $75. On April 30 at 5 p.m., the library is also hosting a virtual wine tasting, which costs $150 and includes a variety of wines. Schug also offers classic wine tastings by appointment Thursday through Sunday for court wine tastings. For more information, visit, call 707.939.9363 or email [email protected].

About Schug Carneros Estate Winery

Schug Carneros Estate Winery was founded 40 years ago by Walter Schug, the founding winemaker of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. With extensive experience producing fine wine in Europe and California, Walter and his wife Gertrude established the winery in the cool ocean climate of the Carneros appellation. Today, the winery is owned by Walter and Gertrud’s children, Axel and Claudia, who continue Walter’s legacy with German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid. In addition to its 42-acre vineyard, the winery sources grapes from some of Sonoma County’s leading grape growers. Shug wines are available directly from the winery in the United States and in more than a dozen countries around the world. Surrounded by vineyards, Schug Carneros Estate Winery sits on a hill 5 miles south of historic Sonoma and offers breathtaking views of the Carneros region and Sonoma Valley.
