Segura Viudas Releases Its First Cava Made with Organic Grapes

Segura Viudas Releases Its First Cava Made with Organic Grapes (WHITE PLAINS, NY, Jan. 12, 2021) – Segura Viudas Winery has drawn on its rich 800-year-old winemaking heritage and sustainable viticultural practices to make its cava from organic grapes. Produced in the famous Spanish D.O. Penedès with an emphasis on indigenous varieties. This cava has lively notes of citrus and tropical fruit thanks to the low yield of the vines that produce more concentrated fruit. Viudas Cava Segura made with organic grapes (MSRP: $13) will be available nationwide in January 2021.

Segura Viudas is rich in Spanish heritage and has been producing since the 12th century. The Cava of the Century in a protected area with a rich biodiversity. The winery’s commitment to indigenous varieties unavailable outside the region – Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada – is the identity of the portfolio. Led by Ton Raventos, second generation chief winemaker, and Mikel Salarich, winemaker and purchasing manager, each cava is blended by carefully blending the base wines, which then undergo significant aging to develop a distinctive, fresh and crisp house flavor.

When the team of winemakers wanted to make a cava from organic grapes, we did so with the goal of creating a brand new blend that respects our past while appealing to today’s consumers, explains Mikel Salarich, winemaker and head of acquisitions. Our mission at Segura Viudas is to help wineries become sustainable – 90% of the local farmers we work with use sustainable practices and our goal is to reach 100%. We believe that maintaining a healthy ecosystem is the best thing we can do for the earth and for the next generation.

For the Segura Viudas Cava, made from organic grapes, the winery uses the organic methods described by the Catalan Council for Organic Agriculture (CCPAE), which limits the use of synthetic chemicals, hormones, herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. The result is an elegant, structured and complex gluten-free vegan cava that pays homage to Segura Viudas’ Spanish roots, both in terms of taste and environmental responsibility. The release of this new cava coincides with the brand’s new #RespectTheRoots campaign. This two-pronged initiative – which highlights both the experience and history of the brand and the physical roots of the vine – seeks to connect the past with the present and the future.

In response to demand from the United States and global interest in organic cava, and in line with the upcoming requirements of the 2022 autumn harvest, Segura Viudas will convert all its wines to qualify for the organic appellation over the next two years. Made from organic grapes, this cava joins the flagship Viudas Cava Brut Segura, the Viudas Brut Rosa Segura and the lush Viudas Segura Heredad reserve.
